A one piece swimsuit is a more committed purchase than a bikini. You are buying a single garment that has to work across your whole body, in one size. Getting it right matters more, and getting it wrong is more frustrating.
Here is what to consider.
One piece vs bikini: when each makes sense
When a one piece makes more sense
- Active swimming or water sports -- no risk of a top coming loose
- You want more coverage without sacrificing style
- You find mix and match sizing less of a concern (you are roughly the same size top and bottom)
- You want a single versatile piece that works across beach, pool, and resort settings
- You prefer the look and feel of a one piece
When separates make more sense
- You are different sizes on top and bottom
- You want the flexibility to mix styles and colours
- You want to build a swimwear wardrobe from fewer pieces
What to look for in a one piece
Torso length
This is the most common fit problem with one pieces. If the torso of the swimsuit is too short for your body, it pulls down at the neckline or cuts in uncomfortably. If it is too long, it sags or bunches at the seat.
One pieces are typically sized for an average torso length at each size. If you are long-waisted, look for styles described as long-torso or adjustable. If you are short-waisted, a higher-cut leg can compensate by adding visual length.
Neckline
The neckline determines how much support and coverage you get on top. Key types:
- Scoop neck -- versatile, modest coverage, suits most body types
- V-neck -- elongates the torso, good for larger busts
- Square neck -- structured, good for smaller busts, currently very popular
- Halter -- supportive for larger busts, puts weight on the neck over long wear
- Off-shoulder -- fashion-forward, less practical for active swimming
Back style
The back of a one piece varies significantly between styles:
- Open back -- dramatic, minimises tan lines, less coverage
- Strappy back -- visual interest, moderate coverage
- Full back -- maximum coverage and support, good for active swimming
- Tie back -- adjustable, can customise fit
Leg cut
The leg cut on a one piece affects both how it looks and how it feels to wear. A high cut leg elongates the leg and suits most body types. A lower cut is more conservative and more comfortable for active movement.
Sizing a one piece
One pieces are harder to size than separates because you have one garment to fit two measurements. General principles:
- If you are between sizes, size up -- a one piece that is too small is immediately obvious and uncomfortable
- Check both the bust and hip measurements against the size guide
- If your measurements straddle two sizes, prioritise fitting the larger measurement and assess the other
